Milestone accomplished: SwissIX is the 77th member of the Terabit Club!

On January 28th, 2026 at 21:19 CET, SwissIX crossed a major milestone by exceeding 1,000,000,000,000 bits per second of peak traffic on the exchange.

This is the natural result of steadily increasing internet usage in Switzerland and the continuous growth of peering partners who value SwissIX for its performance, resilience, and efficiency.

After coming very close to the 1 Tbit/s mark several times over the past few weeks, the final trigger to cross the threshold was — once again — the streaming of UEFA Champions League matches this evening.

With this achievement, SwissIX becomes the 77th Internet Exchange worldwide to enter the Terabit Club. A nice coincidence: 1977 is the year of birth of two of our board members:

  • Matthias Cramer – President and founding member of SwissIX
  • Nik Hug – Treasurer

To support further growth, SwissIX will upgrade its core sites to 400G architecture over the coming months. This may not be enough for the next 77 years — or even the next 77 months — but we are confident it will serve us well for at least the next 77 weeks 😉

A big thank you to all peers, members, sponsors, and board members — past and present — and contributors in any form, as well as to all friends of SwissIX who helped achieve this major milestone in the history of SwissIX.
